Types of Therapy for Abuse

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT focuses on intrusive negative thoughts to replace them with healthy ones. According to CBT thoughts, emotions and behaviors are interlinked. Disruption in one can affect the other two.

It encourages abuse survivors to recognize the negative thoughts that cause them emotional distress and swap them out for positive ones. This transition of thinking patterns fosters positive emotional and behavioral changes.

For instance, a victim or survivor of abuse could experience stress, anxiety, or depression if they continue to blame themselves or have thoughts of worthlessness or guilt. But CBT supports him in altering his view of the experience and himself. It gives him coping mechanisms to manage strong emotions and pessimistic thoughts.

Trauma Focused Therapy

This form of psychotherapy analyzes the effects of abuse experience or trauma on the overall well-being of abuse survivors and works to reduce them.

This healing process in trauma-focused treatment begins by providing a secure and supportive atmosphere in which the abuse victim is informed about the effects of abuse on his mind and body. He is encouraged to write or speak about his traumatic experience, and is taught coping strategies to regulate his emotional arousal. This expression of his painful experience helps him to decrease the negative impact on his current life.

During this therapy he learns to identify and challenge the negative thoughts and trauma triggers.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR therapy differs from traditional psychotherapy. It involves remembering your trauma experiences while moving your eyes in a certain pattern, usually in accordance with your therapist's hand movement.

In this therapy for PTSD, anxiety, and depression, you learn how to reprocess your trauma-related ideas and reduce the impact of abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical means the coexistence of two opposed viewpoints. Dialectical behavior therapy helps you to accept your current situation while simultaneously changing negative behaviors.

It focuses on four skill sets: emotional management, mindfulness, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. It strengthens your coping skills by teaching you how to be present in the moment, deal with stress, control intense emotions, and build healthy relationships.

It was initially designed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD), but it has since been modified to address a variety of mental health issues.
