Types of Therapy for Parental Counseling
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT works to find out and modify negative thought patterns and behaviors in parents that are affecting their relationships with children. With the guidance of qualified therapists, parents recognize their harmful thoughts like “I am not a good parent" or "My child makes me angry on purpose” and replace them with healthy ones.
Parents also learn which of their actions upset their child and how to respond to difficult behavior. They work to alter their reactions or habits to better support their child’s healthy growth.
In many circumstances, CBT treats the parent's own psychological issues (such as anxiety or depression), which can impact their parenting style and the well-being of their children.
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a short-term, evidence-based behavioral treatment for children with emotional problems or disruptive behavior disorders (ODD, ADHD). Its main goal is to strengthen the bond between parents and children. In addition to teaching the kid new skills and habits, the therapy includes educating the parents on how to engage with the child in a constructive and encouraging manner.
PCIT is a two-stage treatment. The first phase is known as Child-Directed Interaction (CDI). Parents are guided to become very strong reinforcers by learning the best ways to pay attention to desirable actions and reinforce positive behaviors when they occur. They also learn when and how to disregard slight disruptive or improper actions. After acquiring these skills, they go to the discipline step.
The second stage, called the Parent-Directed Interaction Phase (PDI), teaches parents more behavior control techniques. It emphasizes better compliance, comforting
techniques, and effective discipline.
PCIT is very successful in improving the bond between parents and children as well as lessening defiance and tantrums. It improves connection, lowers parental stress, increases children's social skills, and reduces disruptive behavior.
Family System Therapy
It is a type of psychotherapy that views family as an interlinked emotional unit as opposed to merely a group of individuals. In this type of therapy the family comes together to support the struggling family member, understand their own responsibilities, and build stronger bonds. It works to address issues through modifications to roles, communication styles, and dysfunctional marital dynamics. It discusses how individual actions impact the system as a whole. It implies that the problem of a single member indicates dysfunction of the whole family unit.
It is particularly helpful for dealing with conflict, behavioral challenges in children, substance use disorders, anxiety, depression, and major life transitions. It takes active participation from family members to define connections, break toxic habits, and promote supportive communication.
Behavioral Parent Training (BPT)
BPT is an evidence-based approach to treat children with disruptive behaviors and emotional challenges. Through this therapy parents learn effective behavior management skills to encourage healthy, positive behaviors and decrease the problematic ones. It improves parent-child relationships.
According to APA, one of the most effective methods for treating and preventing behavioral issues in children and adolescents is behavioral parent training, or BPT.
