Types of Therapy for Anxiety Disorder

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

The American Psychological Association states that cognitive behavioral therapy is highly effective at treating anxiety disorders. It’s a form of psychotherapy.

As its name indicates, it combines two components, cognitive and behavioral. CBT focuses on identifying the negative thoughts and behaviors that are associated with your anxiety disorder.

You learn what thoughts can lead you to negative emotions and how you can reduce your symptoms of anxiety by replacing those negative thoughts with positive ones.

Besides, you learn to change your undesired reaction to anxiety triggers. You learn to cope with distress and adapt helpful behaviors to minimize the impact of anxiety-provoking situations.

Exposure Therapy

In this type of therapy, anxiety disorder is treated by confronting fears in a safe and controlled environment. These fears could be a thing, situation or any activity. Your therapist exposes you to the things you are afraid of. This exposure starts from less stressful situations less stressful to more intensive. Your resilience and coping skills build along the way.

Eventually, the negative effects of those things and your intensive emotional reaction to them get lessened. You learn to develop new realistic beliefs about them.
