Why Therapy for Addiction Matters

Address the Root Cause

Therapy for addiction treatment uncovers the hidden issues that may be contributing to your addictive behavior, like a past trauma or unprocessed emotions.

Emotional Regulation

It helps you get control of your life and learn to react in a healthy way to overwhelming emotional experiences instead of using substances.

Effective coping strategies

Addiction therapy treatment empowers you with an individualized practical plan to recognize and cope with negative thoughts, triggers, and intense emotions.

Improve Social Interaction

It helps you to realize your part in a society and to get out of isolation. It works to repair your damaged relationships through positive behavioral changes.

Relapse Prevention

To keep you perseverant on the path of healing, addiction therapy provides a supportive environment and useful insights to prevent you from giving in or relapsing.

Boost Self-Esteem

Addiction therapy fosters resistance to negative self-perception rather than boosting your confidence and self-esteem to make decisions about your life.

Types of Therapy for Addiction

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

The focus of CBT is on current thoughts and symptoms. It promotes the idea that thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are closely interwoven. A change in one of them can have an effect on the other two.

CBT works to alter the negative mental and behavioral habits that are interfering with your normal daily functioning. It offers alternatives to replace those negative thinking and behavior patterns to help you develop healthy habits and maintain emotional balance.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

It is a modified version of cognitive behavioral therapy. Dialectical means the coexistence of two opposing views. Because with this therapy, you learn to accept your current reality while also changing unhelpful behaviors. It's similar to embracing reality without experiencing pain.

This treatment for addiction focuses on embracing your current struggle with high emotions while taking steps to change the problematic behavior.

DBT focuses on transforming negative self-talk and self-criticism into self-acceptance, as well as improving four core areas. This is accomplished by adopting mindfulness, boosting interpersonal effectiveness, learning to manage emotions, and increasing discomfort tolerance.

Psychodynamic Therapy

This type of treatment for addiction investigates unconscious mental activity, early experiences, and interpersonal relationships to find out your current psychological problem, emotional state, and dismissive behaviors.

Inner conflicts, unresolved concerns, or buried sentiments or thoughts may cause problematic interactions with others.

Understanding your unconscious thoughts and feelings allows you to understand the root causes of strong emotions and troublesome addictive behavior patterns. Depending on your situation, a therapist utilizes evidence-based strategies to lessen symptoms and create healthy coping skills to keep you from substance use or other addictions.

Contingency management (CM)

According to the National Library of Medicine, CM is a highly effective treatment for substance use. This intervention is an evidence-based behavioral therapy that is used to encourage abstinence in addiction recovery. This treatment involves behavioral conditioning using positive reinforcement to prompt productive behaviors.

For example, if a drug screen test returns a negative result, the individual will be rewarded. This reward could be monetary, but it depends on a person's specific goals and motives.

It helps reinforce the individual’s resolve to remain committed to his journey of addiction recovery.
