Types of Therapy for Mood Disorder

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This therapy is widely used to treat mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder. Through CBT you trace out the pattern of thinking and behavior that are the cause of your psychological issues. Then you learn the coping ways to reduce their symptoms and ameliorate your mental and emotional health.

In treatment of mood disorder, CBT helps you to recognize those unhelpful thoughts and habits that are making you vulnerable to emotional instability. The therapist encourages you to learn self-help strategies, keeping in view your mental and emotional condition.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

This therapy is about accepting your current struggle with intense emotions while also making efforts to change the problematic behavior. It focuses mainly on 4 areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

While its core is mindfulness as it encourages you to live in the present moment rather than being submissive to regrets from past or future worries.

This way, you get self awareness and recognize how your negative thoughts are linked to the following emotional distress and pessimistic behavior. You learn to change those automatic negative reactions.

In this therapy for treatment of mood disorders, strategies of CBT are paired with mindfulness to help you manage and regulate your emotional fluctuations and build coping mechanisms against stressful situations.

Psychodynamic Therapy

This form of therapy explores unconscious mental activity, early experiences, and interpersonal relationships to figure out your current psychological issue, emotional state, and dismissive behaviors.

There could be inner conflicts, unresolved issues or buried feelings or thoughts that can make your interaction with others dysfunctional.

Learning about your unconscious thoughts and feelings enables you to identify underlying causes of intense emotions and problematic behavior patterns. According to your condition, a therapist uses evidence-based techniques to reduce symptoms and develop healthy coping skills to save you from being vulnerable to mood disorders.
