Types Of Therapy for Suicidal ideation (Suicidal Thoughts)

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

This type of therapy is effectual for treating suicidal tendencies as it encourages you to challenge your negative beliefs. It involves the understanding of how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected to each other

Your harmful thoughts trigger intense emotions like stress, depression or anxiety. Further, that emotional struggle affects your actions.

CBT helps you to recognize those unhelpful thoughts and behavior patterns to modify them.

To treat people with suicidal tendencies, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on changing their thoughts of hopelessness, self-worthlessness and other negative worldviews. It nurtures hope and guides you to regain your worth and reasons for living.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

It is a modified type of CBT that has proven beneficial to treat people with suicidal thoughts and tendencies. Dialectical means coexistence of two opposite ideas. Because in this therapy you learn to accept your current reality of life as well as change unhelpful behaviors. It is like accepting reality without suffering.

It focuses on four skill sets: emotion regulation, mindfulness, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. It guides us on how to live in the present, deal with stress, regulate intense emotions and improve relationships with others.

Originally, it was developed to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD), but now it has been adapted to treat many other mental health issues. Dialectical Behavior Therapy is especially helpful for those exhibiting self-destructive behavior or with a history of frequent suicide attempts.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Therapists use psychodynamic therapy to find out the underlying cause of suicidal thoughts. This therapy explores your subconscious motives and unresolved conflicts in the past. This helps you to understand how internalized pain and anger can influence your present behavior.

Then it works to heal your underlying causes of self-harm behavior or suicidal ideation. It fosters in you a healthy and balanced perspective about yourself and the world around you to minimize the recurring thoughts of suicide.
